How to sanitize the boat

Thanks to #MondoBarcaMarket

We are witnessing a historical period in which cleaning with common detergents is no longer enough: just in times of need we are realizing how important sanitization is, that is, the procedure aimed at eliminating bacteria, viruses and pathogens that cannot be removed with ordinary cleansing . This month, with the help of industry experts, let’s see what this treatment consists of and why it can also be useful for our boat.

The coronavirus has rewritten the rules that governed our society and, in particular, highlighted the need to sanitize environments that we frequent most, like the house, the car, the boat.

There are several techniques to sanitize the interior and exterior of your boat and you can turn to professionals or do it yourself .

OZONE SANITATION

This method has received scientific validations and the approval of the Ministry of Health, which already in 1996 recognized it as “natural protection for the sterilization of environments contaminated by bacteria, viruses, spores and infested with mites, insects, etc.” (Protocol No. 24482 of July 31, 1996). Currently, however, as for many other products, there is no scientific evidence to prove that ozone sanitization is able to eliminate Coronavirus from surfaces and environments. Its effectiveness is currently under evaluation (to date, the only products whose efficacy against Covid-19 has been confirmed are chlorine-based or alcohol-based products, with a 70% alcohol percentage). Pending authorization at European level, ozone cannot be marketed as a medical-surgical device: at this stage it can be considered a “sanitizer”.

It should be noted, however, that according to the ISS report n ° 25/2020 of 15 May 2020, “Although the evaluation has not been completed, a large database is available which confirms its microbicidal efficacy also on viruses (…) The virucidal activity of ozone is rapidly carried out following ozonation “

In fact, it should be noted that this sanitization system has proven effective against SARS , belonging as the SARS-CoV-2 to the Coronaviridae family . Not only that: ozone has also had positive effects on humans. To date, “over 100 patients with Covid-19 have been treated in 15 hospitals in Italy with oxygen-ozone therapy and all their medical records have coincided in evaluating the effectiveness of the therapy and the improvement of the disease”. This was stated by the president of the Italian Society of Oxygen-Ozone Therapy (Sioot), Mariano Franzini, in the hearing in the Chamber’s Social Affairs Committee (Source: Ansa, 03 June 2020).

MISTING WITH CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

Generally water mist is used to freshen the exteriors of boats and yachts . To obtain a sanitizing action , it will instead be necessary to use a chemical disinfectant. Also for nebulization, as well as for ozonation, it is possible to rely on professionals in the sector or to resort to do-it-yourself, by purchasing a nebulizer . In any case, it is essential to carefully choose the product to be applied, which must be very delicate so that it does not spoil the external surfaces of the boats, often and very willingly very valuable.

MANUAL SANITATION WITH CHEMICAL DETERGENTS

To sanitize small surfaces it is possible to use chemicals. The solutions on the market are manifold, but it is good to underline that the products that have a disinfectant, bactericidal, virucidal action or any action suitable to fight microorganisms, can be of two types: medical-surgical aids or biocides. For this reason, in addition to having to be previously authorized by the Ministry of Health , they must include the wording on the label: ” Biocidal Product – Authorization from the Ministry of Health or EU Authorization n ° /../ .. AUT ( pursuant to EU Reg. no. 528/2012) “or:” Medical Surgical Unit Registration n ° … of the Ministry of Health “.

In particular, as regards the fight against Coronavirus , the Ministry of Health recommends using chlorine-based products (such as sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach or varechin) to eliminate SARS-CoV-2 from surfaces. or alcohol-based, with 70% alcohol percentage (ethanol / ethyl alcohol).
